11th October 2009

And so I face the final curtain.

Tomorrow is race day. I'm very nervous. This has all gotten way too serious, it's not just about finishing any more, I HAVE to set a good time too!

Wish me luck...

Wordy Meme...

So, here is how it goes - Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Please post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you.

Tyasante gave me the following:

Climb
Home
Mac
Freedom
Marathon

So, here we go...

Climb

I climbed for the first time for a friends birthday - I had utterly sucked at abseiling and was a little worried about how it would go. I was rubbish, but I loved it. 12 months later I went for my birthday and Troy and I said that we would definitely take climbing up properly. 6 months later we did the beginners course and haven't looked back since. Troy is a lot further down the line than me, and the move to London has thus far limited opportunities. Climbing is a weird combination of chess and intense physical activity as there is so much thought involved with getting up the routes. It is really really adictive! I struggle because of my weight and my lack of upper body strength, but it is fantastic to have found a sport where the physical attributes only counter for so much - it is your technique and the ability to think creatively that counts for more...

Home

I feel very lucky in that I have 2 homes now. I love the family homestead in Haslemere, I am pretty close with my family and like to have fun with them, and all my closest friends are in Surrey. But London is fast becoming a real part of who I am. There is so much variety here and a lot of friends from university have moved to London too. Add in the fact that I work in such a sociable industry and you get a lot of opportunities to do things. I miss Surrey and particularly the people there, but London is fast becoming the second home that university never really was.

Mac

Every PC I have ever had has been absolutely rubbish, so when I finally had some money after uni and decided to replace my laptop I thought 'sod it, I'm not buying another PC, I'll go for a mac this time to see how it works.' My G5 has been wonderfully stable and I love to use it, though I know that I don't know enough mac theory to get the most out of it. I do sometimes miss playing games, but to be honest it is hard to see myself going back to a PC and sitting on support hot lines again...

Freedom

I really want to know why I had this word chosen for me...

I suppose I like to think that I have a lot freedom. I am not persecuted or imprisoned. I have always got on with my family and never really suffered from any restrictions when I was growing up. I live independently and I am financially sound, which doesn't stop me from trying new things. I like to think, though, that a lot of the time I have a freedom from myself that means I don't stop myself from doing things (apart from talking to women). I like to think that you should always look at reasons why not to do something, rather than asking yourself why - you'll do a lot more interesting things if you are prepared to ignore the doubts and say yes, like go on holiday on your own, or go to an ice bar, or ice climb, or...

Marathon

I have always been big, and I'd say about 55% of the time it doesn't bother me. I have also always loved sport (playing and watching) and doing outdoorsy active kind of stuff (provided you have access to nice beds and showers at the end of the day). I have thought about doing a long distance run for a long time (though I never admitted it to anyone) and then the opportunity to do the royal parks half marathon came up at work and I thought, why not now? The charity I am running for is a great cause, and it is not as intense (or stupid) as going from zero running to a full marathon. I am absolutely loving the training, I'm already looking for the next run to enter for, and you all have to come and watch me in October...

There, does that make any sense?

If I can make it back to Surrey on the bank holiday weekend will people be around?

And by the way, I now have skype downloaded and a headset - how the hell does it work?

So, here we go...

1. Reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload, if you feel like it) 5 songs that start with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

I was given the letter m - unfortunately I don't know how to do the whole posting to youtube videos thing...

1. MACY'S DAY PARADE by Greenday - the thing about Greenday is though they are mainly a rocky punky band, they do slower songs better than so many other bands on the market...

2. MAP OF THE PROBLEMATIC by Muse (two Ms!) - try and get a link to a live version - memories of the best concert I have ever been to - Muse live at Wembley Stadium 2007...

3. MAYONAISE by the Smashing Pumpkins - first heard this being played on an acoustic guitar in a school assembly. Became one my favourite songs during my adolescent years...

4. MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS by the Smashing Pumpkins - yes I know I've used the same band twice, but play this song and let it run straight into TONIGHT, TONIGHT and tell me you are still in a bad mood. It's not possible...

5. MISFIT by Amy Studt - well, it may be a little tacky, but it's also a lot awesome...

19th July 2009

You see, I usually have problems in bars - they are too hot and loud, I never know what to wear, there are too many people and I never usually want to stay long.

So when, for a close friend from the old restaurant's birthday, we were told we were going to a bar in the heart of busy busy London for her surprise, I was filled with a little dread. Until the following was explained:

1. A limited number of people are allowed in this bar at any one time, so not too busy or too noisy.
2. You are given clothes to wear.
3. You are only allowed in for a maximum of 40 minutes at any one time.

and...

4. THE WHOLE BAR WAS MADE OF ICE!

Ice glasses, ice chairs, ice tables!

Crystal clear perfection!

There were few things in life that were a certainty for me.

It is with great regret that I must acknowledge that one of these is no longer certain...

Ok...

Right...

I'm back in Haslemere for a short space of time. Packing must happen now and heavy stuff will move to London.

New Earlsfield house is lovely. I have decided to name it (following the fine DrM and Bluegoo tradition) the Matchbox. Not because it is very small (though Bluegoo will testify that there is more than enough space to live in comfort inside a matchbox) but rather because it is a series of interlocking and charming small spaces that go to make a wonderful hole. All must come and visit it!

We lost a day and a half at work this week because of a virus. Whole system killed. Not fun.

Saw the first episode of True Blood this week. Good, trashy, raunchy fun!

Issues with left thigh and ankle this week (which is annoying, because I am finally getting used to pain in left knee and beneath arch of left foot). All this means training is limited more than I like. Incidentally, www.justgiving.com/prstarky (sorry)...

Missing the Surrey crew massively - Wednesday just didn't feel right this week...

I think that is all I can really say for now. Computer moving to London should mean regular access to stuff, so hopefully I won't be too far away (and I promise I'll try to download skype).

Oh, and I have an iphone... it's awesome...

My anniversary

Tuesday (just gone) was my twelve month of publishing employment anniversary. I bought cake, because I felt like celebrating things...

I'm still busy...

I'm still alive...

I'm still tired...

I have discovered the literary joys that are Abercrombie and Lynch and Rothfuss and Lloyd and Torday and Kei Miller...

And I still love every single minute of it...

*raises glass*

Here's to twelve more!

Please note, there will no detail at all in this post in case people have not seen said film and wish to. Plus I admit to knowing nothing of the Earthsea books (though I do now own Le Guin's quartet in an omnibus edition)...
